HOUSTON September 22, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
ive looked at several of these books on different cities, and frankly they are very mediocre..the old pics are very interesting, but the new pics are amaturish by comparison and the area's covered in this book on houston and the one on dallas..two cities I am very familiar with, were a bit of a disappointment, the one of houston being only slightly better than the one on dallas..that book seemed to be confined only to downtown dallas, the authors should have not focused so much on one area, that being downtown, they should have looked harder for archieval images of other parts of the city, i mean houston is huge..what about the galleria area..or nasa? These books look quickly put together and the text is basic at best...but if all ur looking for is a relatively inexpensive novalty gift or whatever it may suffice..it's your call.
Good old pictures, but that's about all December 30, 2003 Although the book is full of great old photos from the Houston Public Library's collection, the new photography is below par and the text often contains errors -- for example, it gives two different death dates for philanthropist George Hermann and misidentifies the founder of Foley's department store. It's a disappointment that this book could have been a solid, if brief, historic resource, but instead it's just mediocre. And it's especially disappointing to learn that the author is a Houston-based writer who could have verified facts with just a big of legwork. Buy it for the old photos, but don't quote any of the information.
This book is a must have if you care for the city of Houston October 21, 2003 9 out of 14 found this review helpful
Wondering what to give your friends for the holidays? I plan on giving it to both friends and customers! This coffe table quality book is beautiful and full of interesting stories and photos of Houston as it was long ago compared to how you can observe it today. You will find a combination of humor and nostalgia, beauty and reality: a heart-warming depiction of the Bayou City. I'll read it again and again.
