Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Used in library schools worldwide, this standard provides students with a thorough understanding of technical services. Updated and expanded, the 7th edition was carefully re-examined by the authors and includes a complete rewriting of the "Cataloging and Processing" section. The book covers all aspects of the field--from acquisitions to managing the cataloging department--with new emphasis on automation as it affects technical services work and those skills that can be developed through work experience or classroom instruction. Various automated acquisitions systems are described, and a detailed section on automated serials systems is included. Complete with helpful illustrations, statistics, and study guide questions, this text is a must for library and information science students!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent all-around primer   November 14, 2002
6 out of 8 found this review helpful

Now in an extensively updated and significantly expanded seventh edition, Introduction To Technical Services by librarians G. Edward Evans, Sheila S. Intner, and Jean Weihs is a exhaustive reference and guide written especially for those involved in library and information services, and offers invaluable, practical advice, a wealth of technical details, and innovative strategies for upgrading the ability to manage data to keep up with the twenty-first century. Individual chapters address contrasts between the Dewey Decimal Classification and the Library of Congress Classification systems, how to efficiently manage the cataloging department, print based and electronic serials, dealing with distributors and vendors, and much, much more. An excellent all-around primer, Introduction To Technical Services is an important and core addition to any Library Science collection, and highly recommended for academic, corporate, and community librarians charged with the responsibility of coping with the rapidly evolving technologies relevant to all aspects of library operations.
