Product Description As nomad artist and free spirit, Dan Price is fond of noting, "Seems there's tons of empty journal books, but not too many on how to fill 'em up!" In this book, Dan answers the call, teaching readers how to tap into those pent-up creative juices and collect their life experiences on paper.
Not that impressed August 18, 2008 After reading what others said about it, I was expecting this to be a tremendous book. To start with, it was TINY -- hardly bigger than the palm of my hand.
Then, the art was poor. Now, I do appreciate when I don't have to look at pictures that are so good that they discourage me because they're way out of the realm of possibility for me to produce. But, such bad drawings weren't inspiring, either.
Finally, some of the suggestions were plain old silly. Getting rid of the camera and only drawing might be OK for a day or a weekend, but not for a longer time frame. When we travel, we want to come home with photos of the sights (and us enjoying them), since we'll probably not return. Why not enjoy BOTH mediums and have the strength of the true-to-life photos along with the fun of sketches?
It was an OK book and I passed it on to my son so he'll see that journals aren't just for girls. But, it's not something that will hold his attention and inspire him to new levels.
Not what I expected May 30, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I guess I was anticipating something different than what this book delivered.
What I liked:
Mr. Price really is passionate about his journal keeping and his art which I both applause and admire.
he doesn't go on forever about what YOU should buy as far as materials and even shows you how to make your own journal
What I didnt' like:
It was a little too "cute" for me. I felt that this book would be much better suited for a young adult.
There wasn't enough guidence or inspiration for drawing. Yes, I know he loves to draw, but he also suggests using tape to add bits of flowers and pine cones, and the use of photographs. This to me seem more like scrapbooking, which I appreciate as it's own art form, but not the same, in my opinion as a sketchbook journal which is what I thought this was about.
The blank pages at the end. Not sure what that's about. I thought the idea was to get a journal and use it, not use the back of the book as a journal.
This isn't a bad book, it just wasn't what I expected. If you want something a little more on the adult side of things, try Danny Gregory's books.
Essential must have:)! August 19, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a book written straight from the right side of the brain:)!
Delightfully well written and joyfully illustrated, the author's enthusiasm for making one's life journal is infectious!!One begins to see everything in a new light as one reads along...and the next thing you know, you visualise yourself creating your own journal....and the next thing? You're off to get some paper/notebook and some pens...and with new found confidence instilled in your heart, you've begun to write and draw...and even take those 'special' moments photos with elan!!
If you've ever wanted to write your own journal and have been intimidated by the general notions of needing to create something "artisty" and "fancy" to make it look and feel like a journal, this comes to your rescue in style.
You'll love it for the joy the author shares with you about the process of creating the book.....and that of helping you creating your own journal.Go get your copy:)!

Although I didn't get into the whole drawing thing (I am just really terrible at it) and I use my journal for my personal thoughts as well as description of what goes on around me, I got a lot of ideas from this booklet and got really into collecting stuff to paste into my journal. Also, I sometimes get people to write a thing or two in it...which gives it a real personal note. Worth reading if you are into journal writing or scrap booking.
