Product Description
An unparalleled look inside the brilliant mind of one of America's most revered rock legends, Cobain Unseen collects previously unseen artifacts and photographs from the estate's archives to form a fascinating portrait of the creativity, madness, and genius of Kurt Cobain.
Personal items and photographs take readers deeper inside Cobain's life than they've ever been before, and interactive features, such as Kurt's handwritten sticker-sheet of Nirvana name tags, facsimiles of unseen journal pages, and gatefolds of his graffiti-embellished guitars make this an essential keepsake. An audio CD showcasing spoken-word material by Cobain, some of it never before released, will be included. Accompanying the previously unpublished images and memorabilia is a compelling biographical narrative by New York Times-bestselling author Charles R. Cross.

5 out of 5 stars Really Awesome!!!!   January 6, 2009
This book was so much more than I expected.
My husband is a huge Nirvana/Kurt Cobain fan and its always a challenge to find him things he doesn't already have collected and this book was by far his favorite Christmas gift this year. Even I was compelled to read through it before I wrapped it up. Best Cobain book out there!!

5 out of 5 stars great book   January 3, 2009
This book was a gift and the recipient was thrilled and said it met all her expectations. She has also shared it with friends and they also loved the book.

4 out of 5 stars a reason to mourn kurt's suicide   December 30, 2008
This book is a disturbing glimpse into the strange mind of Kurt Cobain.
What I liked most and what I grieve the most in his passing,is his great talent for art. I think Cobain's artistic gift,i.e. "drawing","painting","cartooning",etc. is far above his musical gift, which has been shown to be genius-level;marrying Beatles-like hooks and melodies into punk rock. Cobain almost reaches McCartney levels in terms of melodic gifts.I am an older fan and at first was put off by Cobain's vocal style. I live in the Portland,OR metro area and recall seeing "Nirvana" posters (at the Satyricon club, among others) on utility poles all over town back in the days before their big break;along with missing Johnny Cash,Roy Orbison and Ray Charles, missing Nirvana in their pre-and-supportive tours before and during "Nevermind" in those small clubs are all great regrets of mine.Nirvana was one of the greatest rock bands and maybe the last one that really mattered. Hip-Hop has buried rock since Nirvana went away.
What really is tragic is how Cobain's suicide snuffed out his brilliant artistic talent. That is a huge loss for America's art culture.Who knows what he could've produced?!? Of course,as much pain as Cobain was in,it's no wonder he chose suicide. It is a tragedy for all no matter how you look at it.

4 out of 5 stars Smells like Kurt Cobain's Life   December 27, 2008
The only reason why this gets four stars as opposed to five is because this guy previously had written an authorized autobiography about kurt cobain, the lead singer of my favirote band.

It would have made more sense to go back and release a second edition of that earlier book with all of this information now in it, as opposed to creating a whole other book.

The creativity used to put this book together is admirable though. The foldouts remind me of the pop-up books which my younger brother and I adored when we were little. But the text and images deal with many darker themes, divorce, difference (including disability) poverty, and drugs.

What keeps the book really enjoyable and what critics still selectively miss about grunge is that despite his many hardships, Kurt was not a mean or evil person. He was human like other people. And several photos/artifacts communicate this. We see Kurt smiling and enjoying playing with children, including daughter Frances Bean, insistent that she protect her ears when in 'dad's workplace'.

I'm really not sure I would purchase it 'again' especially in today's economy. But if you absolutely must have every pro-Nirvana book on the market, irrespective of the repetitiveness of the information, it is for you.

Charles Cross did a very good job on this book. It is informative and creative. There is a CD included of Kurt reading his journals that is just mesmerizing. The book gives a good detailed picture of Kurt Cobain and his art in it's many forms and leaves the reader wanting more (as do all books about Kurt). I especially would like to see more CD's of Kurt's speaking coming our way.
