A Real Thinker December 4, 2008 In "The Truth About You," Marcus Buckingham breaks some commonly believed myths and shares his insights on how to succeed in, and more importantly enjoy, your life.
Buckingham encourages us to identify our strengths and weaknesses. But one of the greatest revelations to me was that a strength isn't necessarily something you're good at. You can be good at something you don't enjoy, which would really make it a weakness. It's nuggets like this that get you thinking. In fact, that's the real strength of this book: it's ability to make you think about your life and the way you're living it.
There are three parts to this mini-program: The book, the DVD, and the Rememo pad. The packaging is unique, but it makes the book difficult to read. That is, until I realized that you can actually remove the book from the shiny silver box-like cover. That was an exciting revelation in itself!
If you've got a teenager in the house, or if you're looking for some new direction, pick up "The Truth About You." You may be surprised at what you find out!
The Truth About You lands me the job! December 3, 2008 Knowing that I was about to throw myself headlong into a job search, I chose a relevant book. The Truth About You: Your Secret to Success by Marcus Buckingham is a new book package out from Thomas Nelson. (It's not only a book but included are also a DVD and notepad.) This interactive set is designed to guide the reader through a series of thoughtful exercises which can assist in determining the most natural path to personal fulfillment in one's work.
I have always been able to get the job I wanted, and I've also been employed in the staffing world for a few years now, helping others get jobs on a daily basis. I have picked up many tips and techniques along the way and have grown in my confidence and skill in interviewing (on both sides of the desk). I was slightly amused by this book's ultra-shiny cover and promise of "revolutionary" results; I tend to have a very high level of sales resistance and did not anticipate that the contents of the toolkit would live up to the publisher's hype.
I'm still not sure that I would use the word revolutionary. Unique, exciting, mind-bending, insightful, deeply thought-provoking, but probably not revolutionary. But even so, this package was very, very useful in helping me understand and define my true motivators, strengths, and weaknesses (and they're definitely not what I would have thought they were prior to completing the activities). I was impressed enough that I decided to give Mr. Buckingham's methods a try in my next series of interviews, even using some of his exact phrasing! Lo and behold, a local company is creating a position for me that specifically matches my strengths and skills and I couldn't be more excited to get started.
For such positive results, the amount of time required was very small. The DVD is short (about 20 minutes) but much is packed into that period. The book itself is also quite compact; it took me just a couple hours spread over two evenings to go through all the resources and complete the activities. I went back several times over the next week or so and added to my original notes as new insights came to mind, but even so, it was a very brief investment.
I can heartily recommend this toolkit for anyone who wants to take their natural bents into consideration when seeking clear direction for their future, especially when facing choices about higher education or employment. I intend to keep it in my personal library of career books, and, since I'm staying in the staffing industry, use it as a resource as I coach employees through the interview and hiring process.
easy to read & implement, buy it at a discount though December 3, 2008 i heard buckingham a couple years ago at catalyst and was blown away - great, great, great speaker! very engaging and insightful. i've known people that have read his "strengths" book and been really helped by them. let me say this in one word about this book - letdown! here are some of my observations...
* novelty packaging - i know its important to grab the shopper's attention with packaging and covers...but this is "gadgety" at best - it's packeged in 3 section: first a 20 minute DVD, then a 100 page book, then a "re-memo" pad - save yourself the trouble and just watch the video - then you've got it * way too long - this book could've been written in 25 pages or less * lack of spiritual theme - i know this subject matter doesn't require "support verses" from Scripture - problem i see with is that it doesn't have a "verse foundation" - in other words, it's purely based on observation of human behavior with NO reconciliation or reflection of Scritpure * the "re-memo" pad is way to large to carry around - as advised to do
so, who is this book good for...those working with young adults trying to figure out their life's purpose, those in career transition or career discovery...those going through midlife crises regarding their job.The Truth About You: Your Secret to Success i wouldn't recommened this book to everyone and the price is prohibitive (lists @ 29.99 on back) enough to say that it should really only be for a small audience. i think the text and premise of the book belong better in a better crafted "purpose-driven" type book
Get to it! December 3, 2008 I've read most of Marcus Buckingham's work from Now, Discover Your Strengths to Go Put Your Strengths to Work, all excellent books on identifying and applying your strengths to your life and vocation. So when I ordered his latest book, The Truth About You, I was a bit skeptical. Was it simply going to be more of the same?
Thankfully it was! But in a very precise and to the point format! Where Now, Discover Your Strengths was precise in identifying strengths, it lacked personal application and direction. Go Put Your Strengths to Work focused in on that application, but was overwhelming in scope and direction. The Truth About You hones it all down to an easy and workable format that leaves one energized, focused, and ready to get to work.
My recommendation, get both Now, Discover Your Strengths and The Truth About You, you'll come away with the tools and knowledge necessary to take your life and vocation to the highest levels possible. Then, if you want to delve deeper, get his other books.
As a Strategic Maximizer*, I congratulate Thomas Nelson and Marcus Buckingham on this work - it is at its very best! The only thing I could add to or recommend for it is you, the reader! Take it, use it, and see if you don't find yourself becoming more than you ever thought or hoped you could be.
