5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference book   March 9, 2008
I have read this book several times, and have used it in my office to educate co-workers,students and the like. Years ago, when first working with MPD's (now referred to as DDD's) this book was an excellent learning tool, and helped me avoid feelings of frustration, unlike any other text on the subject. The book does not entertain any doubt that MPD is real, and so the reader does not get lost in the politics, and can quickly get to the real bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Book on Understanding DID   January 28, 2008
This is a wonderful book for people with DID, their families, and friends. It provides some very important basic information that lays the groundwork for understanding behavior, moods, and attitudes. This understanding is absolutely essential for successfully dealing with having DID or dealing with a person who has it. The author also does a great job calming the very frequent fear that those with DID are dangerous. Recommended for anyone who has just been diagnosed, their family, and their friends!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful insightful book on DID/MPD   November 15, 2002

I have DID/MPD and I found this book to be quite useful and informative. My husband liked it just as much as I did. I would recommend this book to hand out to family and friends so that they can have a better understanding of what DID/MPD is. Hocking explains DID/MPD in layman terms that everyone can understand. She gives the reader some "do's and don'ts" in dealing with someone with DID/MPD. A great book for someone who has just been diagnosed with the condition. Hopeful outcome! THUMBS UP!!

2 out of 5 stars A feeling of disappointment for those with MPD knowledge   July 1, 2002

This book sounds good from the title, but after reading it, it gives very vague ideas on how to help the multiple SO and friends and leaves you feeling disatisfied as a reader with intelligence in the field of MPD/DID. As a multiple myself and with all of the informaton out there on MPD and living with it, I expected something more specific with examples and exercises to help the public understand quite a bit more and so did my husband.
This book is thumbs down for both me and my husband, who has luckily formed a support group for the friend and family of multiples that tries to deal with everyday living, laughter, sharing of ideas and just venting the frustration while coping while at the same time dealing with updating his pages on my website in order to help people understand more specific problems that most spouses and friends of multiples come across.

I guess my expectations and his of this book were way too high.
For the basic reader, it's a good starting point, but so very vague in context.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent overview of difficult subject matter   November 11, 1999

As an out-line of how a multiple sees the world outside, this is a good read. Some of these things are quite true to what I know regarding my own internal system, and some are not. I'm a Christian multiple trying to heal, and thought of myself as a walking "contradiction in terms". I know now that at 6 months of age I had few options for survival. You have to draw from the options available. I chose life over death. I'm a surviver. And I still choose life.
