Thoroughly updated for its Fourth Edition, Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry enables students to quickly review, assimilate, and integrate large amounts of complex information by utilizing powerful visual resources that deliver the focus and clarification needed for mastery of difficult biochemical concepts. Its signature outline format, full-color illustrations, and end-of-chapter summaries and USMLE-style review questions make it one of the most user-friendly books in the field.
Better than "basic" November 25, 2008 This was not the recommended text for my first year biochem class......however, when I could not make heads nor tails of the one that WAS recommended, I saw this one and it saved my life. Not only does it explain key concepts, it does so in a manner that pieces all biochemical pathways together - and with PICS!!! What more can you ask for?!?!
Wrong Book with No response November 11, 2008 I was sent the wrong, book with the right receipt. I tried to contact the seller and they still have not contacted me back. I wouldn't buy anything from them ever again. Bad buying experience.
typos November 10, 2008 there some typos in the few pages that I've read so far and wrong labeling on some of the illustrations but the content is good. It makes me think that this new edition was done in a rush.
All I needed to beat the average November 10, 2008 We were supposed to buy other books (Baynes) and I did. I opened it once.
In LIR the end of chapter summaries are very helpful, as are the concept maps. I started with the summary and read back through with a clear understanding of what was important. The BRS is ok for biochem--but maybe just to refresh for the step, it doesn't 'teach' well.
I also watched the Pass Videos (not sure where to get them, I got mine from an upperclassperson) which do a superb job at connectng all the cycles and the prof. is engaging and fabulous. At my medical school only 15% of people pass the in house exams and put all their eggs in the SHELF basket. I'm glad I won't have to.
The online part at thePoint is super helpful. There are loads more of questions than in the book and the full text so you can cut and paste to make your own study guides/flashcards. So far this is the one book from med school with which I have bonded. Two thunbs up!
With the help of this book you too will soon know the relationship of 5FU and dUMP and be able to ask questions like "If the carnitine shuttle leaves Chicago and the malate shuttle leaves New York, who ate the fava beans?"
Superb...In every Way July 17, 2008 Attributes: 1. Wonderfully written in a lucid and point-of-fact manner w/minimal fluff. 2. The correlations are clearly laid out and a must for sensing the overall picture. 3. Fantastic diagrams and there are plenty of them. 4. Entire text is also accessible online which is very important for me because I can cut and paste the stuff and further abridge the contents of the book. 5. Easily readable from cover to cover.....and doing so multiple times is a really good way to encompass the entire width of the subject. 6. Very succinct chapter reviews at the end of each chapter which would satisfy the USMLE Step 1 needs I would think.
I for one am using this for my med-school biochem class and it is a veritable feast of biochem knowledge w/o being mentally bludgeoned by our prescribed text at AUC which is Lehninger.
I only wish the authors were able to write an entire textbook. A bridge between Lehninger and this guide. I for one would buy it in a heart-beat.
Thank you Dr's. Harvey, Champe and Ferrier...a superb and well executed effort.
