Do I even need a lawyer? November 20, 2008 Wow - great book. It starts from debating whether to separate, samples of separation agreements, to legal separation thru to divorce. It has everything you could possibly imagine and is written concisely and in lemans terms for anyone to understand. It is something to read with an open mind whether you are considering divorce, just filed or are in the process. Highly recommend.
Useful book November 20, 2008 Unfortunately, it seems like just about everyone I know is getting divorced right now, including myself. I haven't gone through the whole book yet but already, so far, it's provided me with a lot of great insights that I wouldn't have known about, like asset equalizing. It's not state-specific, so not everything is applicable, but it's a good place to start, especially if you're doing your own divorce cooperatively.
Practical Advice For This Unpleasant Topic November 20, 2008 'Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce' is a good resource for anyone going through this unpleasant experience. Going through one myself I found this guide to be a helpful read in all aspects. From child-rearing concerns to legal rights to emotional issues with separation/divorce, this book will help you better put your ducks in a row when many days it's hard enough just to function.
Great resource that probably anyone in this state should take a look at. Divorce & separation is hard enough for everyone involved. Having someone else list the important steps to you helps out immensely.

Lawyers should keep this one in stock November 20, 2008 When couples are going through the pain and frustration of divorce, caused by whatever fire or ice has invaded their lives, they are not generally inclined to clear thinking about the ramifications of the very serious decisions to be hammered out between them. As a minister I am profoundly aware that marriage is not about love, it is about property and inheritance and child custody. That's why political entities create marriage laws, to determine who owns what and who owes what and who is responsible for minor children. This guide offers a great deal of very wise advice to those headed for splitsville. Lawyers would do well to hand a free copy to clients on their first visit, it would save them a lot of explaining and help agitated clients come to grips with their prospects and plight.
That said, it isn't really a fun read. But, the topic itself is pretty bleak.
A must read and powerful resource! November 20, 2008 If you're facing the emotional trauma and financial upheaval of divorce, Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce is a valuable book. Author and attorney Emily Doskow, with friendly compassion with professional expertise, provides the practical and supportive advice and information in plain English.
In the introduction, the author notes that while the legal part of divorce is not mysterious, the emotional toll can be significant and can lead to long, expensive, contested court cases. Her theme is to urge readers to make the divorce process as civil as possible, especially for couples with children. "It's a simple fact that the more you are able to avoid fighting now, the easier life will be later, when you see your spouse at your son's wedding or your daughter's graduation," writes Doskow.
The Essential Guide to divorce covers custody, property and support, divorce mediation, survival skills for high-conflict contested divorces, how to get help from a lawyer without losing control of the process, and where to find state-specific forms and information and other do-it-yourself resources. The Guide is notable in that it provides 50-state information on all the key issues. While it's not a quick read, it is very clearly written and the book is well organized to allow you to easily find specific information.
Like all Nolo books, this book is well worth the cost and offers a simpler undestanding of all aspects of the divorce process and how to get throught the emotional maze the process creates.
My advice is that even if you have a good lawyer and are working out a reasonable divorce with your ex-spouse, you can use this book as a reference tool to make sure all of the bases in your personal situation are covered. Information is power and understanding that information is KEY!
